What To Wear For Photo Sessions

Preparing for a photo session can be hard work! One of the most important things to consider is “What should we wear?” For an outdoor portrait session for a couple or family, here is what you need to know.

Generally avoid articles of clothing with pictures and writing on them. I recommend thinking in solid colors and avoiding loud patterns. Small plaid and floral patterns are beautiful.

With that said, start with you! What do you like to wear? What do you feel comfortable in? It might be jeans and boots or a long flowy dress. Picking a bold solid color, like blue or yellow, or light colors, such as pastels or even white, will make you stand out from the background in a good way. Layers are also a great way to add accents. From there, use the colors and neutrals in your outfit to find something for the other members of your family.

Lay all of the options you are considering next to each other on your bed. Your eye will see what goes together and what clashes.

Remember to think head-to-toe. For ladies and girls, wear hair at least partway down so that it frames your face. Wear makeup as you normally would. A common issue for ladies is that we think a lot about the outfit and then wear a worn out bra which can create a line across the chest. Check in a mirror before you head out to make sure you don’t fall. Make sure that shoes and socks go with everyone’s outfits as they will be seen in wider shots.

If you are on the fence about any piece, bring it to the session! Having options is always helpful.
